ABOUT
SHOWSObserving and reflecting on her surroundings, Claire Sevaux expressive and strongly pigmented oil paintings capture psychological scenes, a stolen moment, a pulse of life. She is of French and British nationality, lives and works in Paris and trained as an architect in New York City.
To transmit her perceptions of reality, she sketches her subjects in the city, public gardens, trains, open landscapes and museums. She paints mostly in oil with expressive brushstrokes, allowing her intuition to guide the flow of colour and movement. Tension results from the spontaneous paint work and a carefully constructed space.
Her subjects are emotional responses. She re-appropriates subjects from traditional art history and the woman is no longer an object of desire but an active participant, full of life and craving. Some city paintings convey the fragmentary reality of our perceptions, there is solitude, speed, memory all at once.
